The Confederations Cup, the pre-World Cup football tournament that will be held in South Africa, may be cancelled if the swine flu or H5N1 flu virus takes a turn for the worse in the coming weeks. The South African government and the Local Organising Committee (LOC) of the Fifa 2010 World Cup are monitoring the flu situation closely.
“We have not reached a stage where we foresee the cancellation of any games,” he added. “Fifa will be meeting with the WHO in Geneva next week and we will continue to liaise with them.”
Four participating countries – Brazil, Spain, New Zealand and the US – have reported cases of swine flu. This week, Fifa general secretary Jerome Valcke said the threat of a travel ban due to the outbreak of the virus could pose a serious threat to the Confederation Cup.
